Reading Blog #3:

I thought that this reading was very eye opening because I never really thought of internet art as a category of itself. According to the article, internet art is a new form of media art that is distributed through the internet. This form of art is contradictory to the traditional showcasing of art through physical galleries and museums that we are often familiar with. It is very fascinating how this all started with an e-mail software glitch with “net.art” being the only words that were legible. I personally feel that a lot of people have a negative stigma towards digital internet art and believe that it is not as worthy as traditional art because it is not purely a physical medium. Also they may discount the value of internet art because it often takes less time and manual labor to produce. It was extremely eye opening reading about the emergence of the term "net art," which was coined by the artist and curator Tilman Baumgärtel relatively recently (1995) in art history. I really liked Olia Lialina's My Boyfriend Came Back From The War piece because it was very similar to our Webventure projects. Moreover, I liked how this article touched on the emergence of female internet artists and the rise of Cyberfeminism. I enjoyed learning about the Old Boys Network, which was a space for women to share their experiences in the male-dominated world of technology and promote feminist perspectives. I believe that this movement has paved the way for new conversations and perspectives on gender and technology.
