Artist Statement #3: When reflecting on my Daydream Video for Project 3, I was impressed with how I was able to expand on my original idea. I started off with a real life scene of me preparing a green smoothie in a blender. Then, as I press the “on” button, the scene slowly transitions into a hallucination that switches back and forth from monochromatic and color themes. As the smoothie continues to blend, the scene becomes more hazy and cloudy. My first animation that I made in After Effects shows fruits bouncing around in a hypnosis spiral with the spinning razor blade being symbolic of a ticking clock. Then it switches to being stranded in the ocean with a shark because the blender blades reminded me of a shark’s sharp teeth. I edited a clip from the Divergent movie when the main character realizes that she is not actually trapped in a houdini box of filling water and that it is “not real”. In this part of the video, it alludes to the fact that there is a small glimpse of waking up from this dream. I also decided to incorporate scenes from the movie In Time that makes many references to running out of time and money. I made these scenes extremely trippy to demonstrate that we are still in a state of psychosis. I experimented with altering the visuals as well as echoing the voices to create an illusion. Towards the end, the buildup of suspenseful sound with the ticking clock signifies an approaching awakening. I used my animations of a ringing grandfather clock to show that the dream has now come to an end and bring the video back to real life as I show myself pouring the smoothie in a glass cup. I made a homage to the movie Clockwork Orange with my use of Beethoven's 9th symphony. In the movie, the sound is played on endless loop to torture someone who is trapped inside of a bedroom into mental insanity. Overall, if I were to change anything about my project, I would want to incorporate more sound effects and transition/filter effects to make this video more engaging as well as visually appealing.
